6 Common Misconceptions about Electric Bikes

Electric bikes, or ebikes, have gained immense popularity in recent years, providing a sustainable and convenient alternative to traditional bicycles. However, along with their rising fame, several misconceptions have emerged. In this article, we debunk the top 6 e-bike myths and set the record straight with fun and informative facts that you can share the next time you discuss the growing electric bike trend.

1.Misconceptionyth: "Ebikes are Just for Lazy Riders."

Contrary to the belief that ebikes are solely for the lazy, they are designed to assist riders, not replace their efforts entirely. Ebikes offer various levels of pedal assistance, allowing cyclists to choose the amount of support they need. This makes them accessible to people of all fitness levels, encouraging more individuals to adopt cycling as a mode of transportation or exercise.

2.Misconceptionyth: “You cannot ride e-bikes in the rain.”

In today's market, most ebikes are water-resistant and can handle wet conditions with no problem. Puddles on wet roads are not a problem because they protect the electrical components from water splashing from any direction. You can also ride your electric bike while it's raining. This does not mean you should submerge or pressure wash the ebike as they can cause permanent damage.

The Aniioki bikes are well sealed and the batteries are made to be waterproof and protected enough to withstand light to moderate rain. As with conventional bicycles, if you are riding in a rainstorm, it is usually a good idea to move yourself and your e-bike to a dry place until the rain abates. E-bikes should never be ridden in deep pools of water or placed underwater. This environment can damage all bikes, including e-bikes.

3.Misconceptionyth: “E-bikes run out of power quickly.”

Yes, ebikes use a battery and that battery doesn’t last forever. By spending money to get a high-quality product, you can ensure high performance, and a long life span when it comes to your battery power. However the ebike can still be riden like a normal bike once the battery has been depleted.

For example, the Aniioki A8 Pro Max is equipped with a 52v 60Ah battery that can travel more than 200 miles per charge in pedal assist mode, and approximately 100--130 miles per charge in electric-only mode. That's plenty of power to get you where you're going. Even if you want to go on a long ride and need to extend the battery life without recharging, one of the advantages of our bikes is that you can keep an extra battery pack, fully charged, and replace it when needed.

4.Misconceptionyth: “E-bikes take away the benefits of exercise.”

Ebikes are just like traditional bikes in the sense that you can still pedal whenever you want, and however hard you want. E-bikes simply provide a boost to your effort. You could still choose to ride up a steep hill without assistance, and the extra weight of the battery would add to your workout effort!

While you do have a full-assist available on an e-bike, it’s not required to be used. For example, ebikes provide five settings for assistance level, offering you the ability to fine-tune the amount of exercise effort on your ride. You can even turn the assist function completely off!

It’s also worth noting that e-bikes can extend the range a rider could normally ride without assistance, making it possible to exercise for a more extended overall period of time than if they weren’t riding an e-bike. Studies show e-bikes offer the same level of exercise as a traditional bike, as they still enable riders to elevate their heart rate as traditional bikes do. For more details on the exercise benefit and studies.

5.Misconceptionyth: "Ebikes Are Difficult to Maintain.”

It’s important to remember that at their core, ebikes are still regular bikes. Ebikes use the same chains, gears, and brakes that standard bikes do. So at a base level, ebikes require about the same amount of maintenance as regular bikes.

Much like traditional bikes, the level of maintenance needed on an ebike is heavily dependent on the level of usage. For example, a daily rider’s bike will need more regular maintenance than those who ride recreationally on the weekends.

Aniioki Bike batteries are durable, the frame is solid, and with proper maintenance, you will be able to enjoy many years of your e-bike with a very reasonable total cost of ownership. If you buy a cheap e-bike, there is always the chance that the parts could break or it could be uncomfortable, leading you to need to purchase another one which would cost you twice as much! Therefore, we recommend always choosing high-quality products with a low total cost of ownership such as our line of premium electric bikes.

6.Misconceptionyth: "Ebikes Are Slow and Inefficient."

Maintaining an ebike is no more complicated than caring for a regular bicycle. Basic maintenance tasks include keeping the tires properly inflated, lubricating the chain, and ensuring the brakes function well. While the battery does require attention, manufacturers provide user-friendly guidelines. Many bike shops also offer maintenance services specific to ebikes, making it easy for riders to keep their electric steeds in top condition.
